After the lovely afternoon in Bremen we decided to continue our drive north east to where our hosts lived in Ahrensburg, outside of Hamburg. Wolf and Claudia were colleagues of fish's from a previous museum project involving a German-help Alutiiq kayak and the last time he'd been to their home he raved about the amazing family. He was right. Along with their two teenage girls, Lilly and Klara, they showed us an amazing time over the next 2 days & 3 nights. Our 1st night we had a simple dinner, follows by what sounded like it was going to be a little after-dinner stroll, which actually turned into a two hour hike around a castle... Germans love their walks, as do we, but we felt like leads were tied to our jet lagged legs when we arrived home at 11 and fell straight to sleep. Eilidh was wonderful, never complaining, skipping, somehow keeping up with the long- legged 6 foot Germans. day two fish drove back to our hotel to get our forgotten iPad while the girls walked and took the train into Hamburg to visit the ethnographic museum and the zoo, while day three was Saturday market, castle, farm visit, and park visit, followed by an intense dinner of cheese and marvelous German bread. The family were marvelous hosts and we slightly-reluctantly got ourselves packed up for our 6 hour drive to Prague.
Some highlights of the visit:
The kindness of Wolf & Claudia |
The park near the house. Oh, Germans have created some amazing parks for their kids! |
Trips to the market with the whole family... |
Trip to a local organic farm to see baby pigs, cows, horses & chickens. |
A memorable trip to a local park with the girls... The adults walked home while the little girls rode their bikes the 45 minutes or so to the house. |
An amazing invention, this playground chair- it swings based on the position of your body weight! Genius. lean forward to stop- leave back to swing around in circles! |
Teenagers indulging the 6 year old. |
The epic cheese meal. Not sure what is going on in this picture, though. Too much cheese?! |
Learning how to shell beans and peel pea pods. |
Wolf's method of eating the pea pods meant peeling of the hard outer share. The bonus: Eilidh created an elf pea pod. |
Making an amazing veggie dinner |
